What began as a street art project in Australia, The Toy Society has spread across the world. Started by a mother of one, Bianca Brownlow created a handmade toy, packaged it up and dropped the toy off in an Australian neighbourhood with the hopes some lucky person would find and adopt it. The idea has quickly caught on and handmade toys are being made and deposited around the globe just like their motto states: The Toy Society spreads the love throughout the streets of the world. Nothing to it really just a bunch of handmade toys looking for a nice home.
Wonderful in so many ways, The Toy Society celebrates creating handmade toys, the value of sharing yet expecting nothing in return, and the thrill of embarking on a secret adventure. It’s easy to become involved: on the left hand side of The Toy Society’s home page fill out the Get In On It section and easy to follow instructions will be sent to you by email. Once you’ve made your handmade toy, you package it in a plastic bag along with a ‘Take Me Home’ tag and a letter about The Toy Society. Your “drop” is catalogued on the blog and often toys that are found and are “registered” with The Toy Society so you may be able to see whom has adopted your toy.
I can’t wait to begin this project with my 2 1/2 year old son as it is a great family activity. I’d like to thank El for introducing The Toy Society to me – she knows I love making handmade toys so this is a real treat.
